It entered English in the 14th century, initially describing the literal sharpness of a blade before acquiring its figurative sense of thought or expression so precise and direct it cuts through complexity without effort, leaving clarity where confusion previously stood.

H.L. Mencken — the American journalist and critic — was perhaps the 20th century’s most celebrated practitioner of trenchant prose.
