Callow

KAL-oh

Definition

(adjective) Immature and inexperienced; lacking the emotional depth or worldly knowledge that comes only with time.

Example

The callow enthusiasm of the new hire was charming for about a week — then the team realized he had mistaken confidence for competence and nobody had told him yet.

Word Origin

Callow derives from the Old English calu, meaning “bald” or “bare” — related to the Latin calvus, also meaning “bald.” Its earliest use in English described unfledged birds — chicks whose feathers had not yet grown in, leaving them bare and unable to fly. The metaphor transferred naturally to young people not yet equipped with the experience and judgment that would eventually allow them to navigate the world independently. It entered its modern figurative sense in the 16th century, the image of the unfeathered bird quietly embedded in every use.

Fun Fact

The feather metaphor embedded in callow connects to one of ornithology’s most fascinating developmental phenomena — altricial versus precocial birds. Altricial birds, like robins and sparrows, hatch completely helpless, blind, and featherless — the very picture of callowness — requiring weeks of intensive parental care before they can survive independently. Precocial birds, like ducks and chickens, hatch fully feathered and capable of walking within hours. The difference reflects entirely different evolutionary strategies for the same problem of survival — which is either a comforting reminder that callowness is a temporary condition or a humbling suggestion that some species never needed it in the first place.
