dair-ih-VAY-shun

Definition

(noun) The origin and development of a word; the process by which it was formed and the source from which it came.

Example

Understanding the derivation of a word rarely changes its meaning — but it almost always changes how the meaning feels, which turns out to matter more than expected.

Word Origin

Derivation comes from the Latin derivatio, meaning “a leading away of water” — from derivare, built from de- (“away from”) and rivus (“stream”). The original image is hydraulic: a derivation was a channel cut to divert water from its source into new territory. The metaphor of language as water — flowing from a source, branching into tributaries, finding its way into new landscapes — is one of the oldest and most persistent in linguistics, and it is built into the very word used to describe where words come from.

Fun Fact

The English language’s most promiscuous borrower is arguably the legal system — which has absorbed derivations from Latin, French, and Old English simultaneously, producing a vocabulary so layered that the same concept often has three words of different origins meaning almost but not quite the same thing. Ask, question, and interrogate all describe requesting information — from Old English, French, and Latin respectively. Kingly, royal, and regal all describe things relating to a monarch — from Old English, French, and Latin again. Linguists call this stratification, and it is a direct consequence of the Norman Conquest of 1066, which imposed French onto an Old English base and left Latin underneath both — a triple derivation that English has never fully resolved and possibly never will.
