From Medieval Latin gamma ut, referring to the lowest note in the medieval musical scale — gamma being the Greek letter used to denote the note, and ut being the first syllable of the medieval solfège system (the precursor to do-re-mi). The full scale running from gamma ut upward came to represent the complete range of musical notes, and by the 17th century the word had broadened in English to mean any complete range or extent of something.

The phrase “run the gamut” has been a fixture of English since at least the 16th century, but the gamut itself has always been about what gets left out as much as what’s included. In color science, a “color gamut” defines the full range of colors a particular device — a monitor, a printer, a camera — is capable of reproducing. No device can reproduce every color the human eye can see, which is why professional photographers and designers obsess over gamut coverage.
