Pallid derives from the Latin pallidus, meaning “pale” or “wan,” from pallere — “to be pale” — itself related to the Proto-Indo-European root meaning “pale” or “gray.” The same root gives us pallor — the noun form describing extreme paleness — and appall, which originally meant to make pale with horror before acquiring its broader modern sense. It entered English in the 16th century, used initially to describe physical paleness before expanding into its figurative sense of anything drained of the vitality or conviction that would make it convincing.

The connection between pallor and fear has deep physiological roots — when the body perceives threat, blood is redirected from the skin to the muscles and vital organs in preparation for fight or flight, producing the sudden paleness associated with shock or terror. This is why both genuine fear and its literary description so consistently produce pallid faces. The word appall preserves this connection etymologically — to appall someone was originally to drain the color from them, to make them pallid with horror. Language has been tracking the relationship between emotional state and skin tone for so long that the physiology is built into the vocabulary.
